Liu Jianhong, the ex-LeSports President and former well-known CCTV Sports programme host, has joined the Tencent subsidiary, Live.QQ.com, now called Penguin Sports. The move was officially announced yesterday, August 2.
Live.QQ.com is a vertical sports live streaming platform that belongs to Tencent. The platform relies on the sports media rights that Tencent Sports has acquired globally to attract audiences such as the rights to the NBA, MLB and NFL and around 20 top sports properties/events. It is said that the platform has attracted more than 30 million users in total and has more than 1.5 million daily live users.
Apart from world leading sports events, Live.QQ.com also broadcasts and/or produces many grassroots and domestic sports events. Production has become an important part of their business, besides its pay-per-view, its membership system and advertising.
Liu Jianhong’s appointment as the President of Live.QQ.com, or Penguin Sports happened alongside the recruitment of Ding Yi, another executive that has joined Penguin Sports at the same time. Together they will try to establish a “streaming+production+youth training” approach for Penguin Sports and increase content and offers for members.
Liu Jianhong, in particular, will explore combining youth training with the current business of Penguin Sports. This appointment is generally considered as his third “entrepreneurship”.
