On March 20, the Chengdu Better City Football Club, supported by Chengdu Better City Group and Chengdu Virscend Football Training Center, was officially launched on Wednesday.
The club was formerly known as Chengdu Qbao FC because of its title sponsor, Qbao.com, a China-based online financial platform. In March, the Chinese Champions League outfit left its former title sponsor since Zhang Xiaolei, head of the financial platform, surrendered to local authorities on December 28, 2017.
Gu Jianming, President of the Chengdu Football Association, suggested the rebranded team be promoted to the China League One within 3 years and to the Chinese Super League within 5 years. He also noted that the local football governing body will help the club become more professional in the future.
Wei Qun, deputy general manager of the club, updated a Weibo post saying: “A new chapter for Chengdu football. Let’s fight together!”
At the launch ceremony, the club also released a new team logo combining elements of Chengdu City, title sponsorship and team values. Li Mingqin was named club president and general manager while José Carlos Granero remained as the head coach. The club office is located in Chengdu’s West Village.
