Guangzhou Evergrande tied home team Shandong Luneng 1-1 to win the Chinese
Super League for the consecutive fourth time on Sunday.
Evergrande, the winners of the Asian Champions League in 2013, top the table with 70 points from 30 rounds, three points ahead of the runners-up Beijing Guoan.
Before today’s last round, Evergrande only needed a draw to retain the title and they made it in the end.
Luneng opened the scoring in the 12th minute as Liu Binbin finished an one to one and blasted the ball into the back of the net.
Evergrande equalized in the 43rd minute with Brailian international Elkeson’s long range shot.
Evergrande had several chances in the second half but Alberto Gilardino’s shot was denied by Luneng’s goalkeeper Wang Dalei in the 49th minute and Elkeson’s shot hit the post in the 87th.
Evergrande won the Chinse Super League with 76 goals in total and the golden boots Elkeson scored the most 28.
Evergrande head coach Marcello Lippi said it was his last match with the team as the head coach.
“I don’t want to be the head coach any more as an old man, and Evergrande will have a new coach next season,” the 66-year-old Italian said. More details will be released next week.
Beijing Guoan stunned the fans with a goalless draw with Henan Jianye at home on Sunday, finshing second with 67 points.
Guoan played aggressively but squandered many chances.
Guoan’s Spanish head coach Gregorio Manzano said,”Our players tried their best from the start to the end and they were just lack of some luck.It’s a memorable season and I hope we can do better next year.”
Struggling Henan Jianye avoided relegation with the draw and ranked third to the last with 30 points.
Dalian Aerbin and Harbin Yiteng were relegated. Traditional soccer powerhouse Aerbin tied Shanghai Shenxin 1-1 in an away game and collected 29 points from 30 rounds. Yiteng lay at the bottom with only 21 points.
