Eastern Sports Club, a Hong Kong-based football and basketball club, announced yesterday that it has launched the first local professional basketball team. The club aims to change the local basketball scene which has been dominated by South China and Winling basketball clubs in recent years.
With strong financial support, the basketball team are targeting both the Hong Kong FA cup and league championship in their first top flight season.
Eastern’s soccer team is now top of the table in the Hong Kong Premier League with 26 points.
“We come here to win everything,” said the club’s director Peter Leung Shou-chi. “All our players are training full-time and paid as professionals. Hopefully, other teams will follow suit and bring more new excitement into the sport in Hong Kong.”
The Eastern Basketball Team will make their debut in the A1 Division when they take on Winling in the Senior Shield at Southorn Stadium on Tuesday.
