On the eve of the PyeongChang 2018’s opening ceremony, three Chinese media, internet-based Tencent and Youku and the TV channel Great Sports, announced their inclusion on the roster of the Games’ broadcasters on China Mainland.
In news released by Tencent, the Chinese Internet giant has captured the broadcasting rights to the 17-day Games on its live streaming platform. A reporting group with nearly 100 Tencent employees has arrived in PyeongChang and around another 100 editors are staying in China to update the Games’ content 24/7.
Additionally, Tencent has set up two studios in PyeongChang where two Team China programs featuring interviews and latest news with Chinese athletes, coaches, sports officers and experts will be produced.
One extraordinary fact is that Tencent Sports is the exclusive Internet Service Partner of the Chinese Olympic Committee and has partnered with 10 stars of the Chinese Winter Olympic Team.
As the other internet-based broadcaster of the Games, the Chinese video hosting service provider Youku has been endorsed with the video-on-demand rights to PyeongChang 2018, as reported by the Chinese news website ifeng.com. It means that Chinese users can watch key events of the Games on demand on their website.
Apart from the internet-based services above, Youku will update news and results of PyeongChang 2018 with a series of original programs related to the Games will be produced and broadcasted by Youku.
The Shanghai local newspaper, Shanghai Morning Post, has also reported that the Shanghai-based sports TV channel Great Sports had acquired the rights to broadcast the opening and closing ceremonies of PyeongChang 2018, as well as some highly important events such as figure skating, curling and skiing.
Great Sports has also sent its reporting teams to PyeongChang. During the 17 days, the team will deliver the Games’ highlights to Chinese audiences on its TV channel and various internet-based media platforms.
