China’s online video giant PPTV, currently the exclusive rights holder of La Liga in the country, has announced that it is planning to broadcast high-quality soccer matches in virtual reality (VR).
PPTV has paid 250 million euros to acquire the broadcasting rights to the Spanish La Liga in China. The deal is for five years until 2020.
This VR strategy will apply to the Spanish top-tier soccer league and English Premier League (EPL) on PPTV. To do so, the company will make full use of its expertise in big data analysis to recommend viewers favourite content, games and an online shopping service.
"Online sports is a gold mine in China where consumers are willing to pay for unique content," said Yin Yuan, PPTV's vice president.
"PPTV represents a key partner for us. We seek companies who are prepared to offer Spanish football good coverage and PPTV does just that. I'm sure that this relationship will see us grow stronger together. Thanks to PPTV, Spanish football will receive its best ever coverage in China." stated La Liga President Javier Tebas.
