SPORTACCORD 2024 INSIGHTS: Sport’s Perfect Storm
23 May 2024 14:34
A delegation led by Diego Gigliani, Director of Marketing, Media and Fan Development at Manchester City Football Club (MCFC), recently paid a visit to the home of Sina Weibo, the Chinese microblogging website.
The two sides discussed the possibility of a multi-level co-operation in areas like event operation, business partnership and charity activities. This is according to a post by Weibo Football, Weibo’s official account that focuses on football events.
Beijing has strengthened co-operation with City in terms of football business, ever since Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the Manchester City Football Academy last October. Notably, China’s CMC and CITIC Capital invested US$400 million last December in acquiring over 13% of City Football Group (CFG) which owns MCFC.
Gigliani’s visit will promote the expansion of CFG’s social media business in China. As stated in the post, Sergio Agüero and MCFC have already launched Weibo accounts. New accounts are also being set up to enable Chinese fans to interact with favorites like David Silva and Vincent Kompany.
