Wisdom Sports Group, a major sports marketing and management company in China, has announced ambitious plans to engage 12.6 million participants by 2016.
As sports like marathons, cycling and basketball have become ever more popular in China, Wisdom plans to organize a total of 5,240 sporting events with local sports bureaus and marketing partners across China next year. The aim is to promote an active lifestyle among Chinese people.
Ren Wen, chairwoman of Wisdom, said growing the population of regular sports participants is the key to stimulating consumption in sport-related businesses in order to achieve this goal.
"Only by promoting sports participation as a need in daily life among China’s huge population can we reach the point where the sports industry contributes significantly to economic growth in China," Ren said at a press conference in Beijing.
In addition to events run with local partners, Wisdom will also expand its own brand, the Season Run Series, to 16 different cities in 2016 from six this year. This is designed to accommodate the growing passion of the public for organised events.
