The winger Zhang Chengdong has become the first Chinese player to be signed by a La Liga club but it had nothing to do with the coach and was imposed on him by club officials.
With the season rapidly approaching, the disruption of having to integrate a player that he did not want has not gone down well with Jemez, who pulled no punches in his assessment of the situation surrounding the 26-year-old wide man's move to Campo de Futbol de Vallecas.
"I do not believe that anyone from outside the club should interfere in sporting matters. This is possibly the worst decision that has been taken since I have been here. You can't allow a sponsor to bring in a player," he explained.
"This is not about whether [Zhang] is a good or bad player, it's the fact of having a player imposed on me by a sponsor," James told Cadena SER.
"The contract said that a Chinese football player had to come to Rayo. We have chosen one that will adapt best to our team, a player who already has experience in both the Portuguese and German leagues."
"He is going to be another player. It is not the lad's fault at all. He arrives with excitement and if he shows me that he is better than the others he will play."
