At the Tibet Sports Work Conference held on Feb 6 in Lhasa, the Sports Bureau of Tibet Autonomous Region released its work report on the development of its public sports services and sports industry for 2017, according to Chinanews.com.
Hu Bin, Director of Sports Bureau of Tibet Autonomous Region, made a presentation at the conference outlining that Tibet had spent RMB 120m on the construction of 49 football pitches for communities in the Autonomous Region. Other infrastructure such as sports towns, hiking trails and climbing facilities have also been established with a total investment of RMB 12m.
Youth sports has received massive support in Tibet with one youth sports club being awarded the “National Demonstration Youth Sports Club” and 12 National Youth Sports Clubs were set up.
Meanwhile, five Tibetan schools were nominated as “National Traditional Sports Schools” and 14 schools were rated as “Tibetan Traditional Sports Schools”. As Hu disclosed, Tibet invested RMB 1.28m to secure the establishment and operation of these clubs and schools.
What was greatly emphasized by Hu was the result of the Tibetan mountaineering industry. In 2017, the mountaineering industry in Tibet generated a revenue of over RMB 11m with 377 foreign mountaineering enthusiasts from 29 countries coming to Tibet for mountaineering tours.
Hu also introduced Tibet’s sports plan for 2018. This year, the Sports Bureau of Tibet Autonomous Region will encourage public sports venues to be available free of charge or for a discounted fee to the public. Tibet will also continue to build more public sports venues and facilities for residents.
The sports industry, especially the mountaineering and outdoor sports industry, will remain as one of the key priorities for Tibet in 2018. According to Hu, Tibet seeks to combine its sports and tourism industries, which would help to maximize the value of Tibet’s sports resources.
Additionally, Tibet will keep on developing youth sports and traditional sports with a series of youth sports events and the launch of a traditional sports association in 2018.
