Eleven Chinese departments including the General Administration of Sport of China (GASC) have released plans for the cycling industry for the 2018-2020 period.
According to official data, China has hosted more than 2,000 cycling events in 2016, with over 10,000 cycling clubs and 8 million athletes in the sport by the end of that year.
The plan suggests the country aims to establish a cycling industry with diversified investors and financing models that boasts well-established standards and rules, enough fitness space, upgraded cycling facilities and more cycling participants.
Specifically, China is looking to grow itself into a 150-billion-yuan cycling industry and make the total number of cycling events reach 5,000 by the year 2020.
In addition to this, the plan also includes an information management platform for cycling events, independent operation reforms of domestic cycling leagues, establishment of special cycling towns, a “cycling plus tourism” model and talent program for retired athletes.
