The National Basketball Association (NBA) has become a partner of the Akon Lighting Africa, a project aiming to provide clean, renewable and affordable energy solutions for rural and remote areas in Africa.
As a co-sponsor of the project, Jiangsu-based Rotor Energy is set to help the NBA in growing and improving youth basketball participation in African countries.
The project also has ties to the Jr. NBA Senegal League, a school-based basketball league for boys aged 15 and under, providing sponsorship and solar-powered lighting systems for outdoor basketball courts in Senegal.
The project was launched in February 2014 by international music star Akon, youth leader Thione Niang and entrepreneur Samba Bathily. It currently operates in 17 countries throughout Africa.
Under its public-private partnership model and a network of excellent partners, this initiative has rapidly driven a series of high-quality solar developments including the installation of street lamps and domestic and community kits in many countries throughout Africa.
