Through implementing the 2015 General Plan of Chinese Football Reform, China has officially decided to establish two national women’s football teams, the Red Team and the Yellow Team.
As the Chinese Football Association (CFA) said in an official statement, this move aims to enable China to make it to the top of the world’s women’s football pitches as well as prepare for major international events like the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
It is expected that the Red Team will act as the first team to participate in international games, while the Yellow Team will become the reserves. The two teams will receive training and operate independently, promoting their development in a competitive model.
Sigurdur Ragnar Eyjolfsson from Iceland has been named as the head coach of the Red Team, and Sun Wen, former national women’s team captain, will be Sigurdur’s assistant. The Yellow Team will be coached by Pei Encai who directed the national women’s squad in 2005. The coaching staff also include Zhang Haitao, Fan Yunjie and Li Zhigao.
The two teams will start their training projects in Shanghai and Beijing respectively.
