World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), the organizers of the IRONMAN Races, recently announced on June 2 that they had added the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon series to their leisure and lifestyle portfolio by fully acquiring Competitor Group Inc.
As reported by Sohu, this deal secures WTC’s position as one of the largest sports endurance organisations in the world. CGI owns or operates more than 30 world-class running races, with their flagship event being the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series where over 600,000 runners participate annually. WTC also organizes and owns over 20 running races around the world, such as the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon, the ASB Auckland Marathon, the Marathon de Bordeaux and Across the Bay 10k.
This acquisition will see a strengthening of CGI’s business and Wanda Sports’ global influence, leading to Wanda Sports creating a unique business model and a global exclusive IP series. Alongside organizing the IRONMAN Races, Wanda Sports have also partnered with Abbott World Marathon Majors (WMM) in recent years to launch a new series of marathon races in China and Asia. Furthermore, in addition to the Ironman events, Wanda has continued its spending spree since 2015 on road cycling and mountain bike events, such as the UCI Velothon Majors and Absa Cape Epic.
