NBA China has just announced the establishment of a Chinese mentor group for Jr. NBA, in order to support and promote the development of Chinese youth basketball. The mentor group will provide guidance and assistance on the direction and content of Jr. NBA in China, and get more Chinese young people to experience the charm of basketball.
The members of the Jr. NBA Chinese mentor group include the Chinese singer and actor Kris Wu, Harris Barnes (Dallas Mavericks), Mike Conley (Memphis Grizzlies), Aaron Gordon (Orlando Magic), Zach LaVine (Minnesota Timberwolves), Jeremy Lin (Brooklyn Nets), C.J. McCollum (Portland Trail Blazers) and Paul Pierce (Los Angeles Clippers).
To celebrate the establishment of the Jr. NBA mentor group, David Shoemaker, the CEO of NBA China, and Kris Wu jointly held a Jr. NBA basketball training class at the Tulane University of New Orleans on February 17th, with 12 students from China participating.
Jr. NBA is the global youth basketball development program of NBA. It aims at increasing the participation of young people in basketball through grassroots basketball events. During the 2016 and 2017 seasons, over 12 million young people in 50 countries and regions have participated in the Jr. NBA program. In China, there have been Jr. NBA juvenile basketball matches held in 7 cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Lishui and Xiantao.
Apart from Jr. NBA, NBA China has also built a partnership with the Chinese Ministry of Education to hold basketball training sessions for P.E. teachers across the country. During the 2016 and 2017 school years, there have been 525 schools involved in this program.
