Chinese real estate conglomerate Dalian Wanda is reported to have launched a bid to acquire the World Cyber Games (WCG), an international e-sports event operated by South Korean company World Cyber Games Inc.
According to earlier reports, Chinese internet giant Tencent has also shown its interest in the event. It supported the video platform Nice TV to battle for the e-sport brand.
Wang Sicong, son of China’s richest man Wang Jianlin, is responsible for this proposed acquisition. Sicong has been busy setting up his e-sport kingdom: investment in e-game companies like HERO Entertainment, ImbaTV, Forgame and Idreamsky; the establishment of a live broadcast platform Panda TV; the setting up of an agency arm, Banana Plan.
The WCG has been sponsored by Samsung Electronics and Microsoft. WCG events have attempted to emulate traditional sporting tournaments, such as the Olympic Games. As of 2011, the World Cyber Games was the largest global electronic sport tournament, with divisions in various countries.
