On August 23, Migu, the digital content services subsidiary of China’s telecommunications giant China Mobile, have struck a deal with Tencent, FIBA’s exclusive digital media partner in China, granting Migu the rights to stream all of Team China’s games at the 2019 Basketball FIBA World Cup, as well as the rights to stream some of the World Cup games in high-definition or 4K signals. The deal also makes Migu the only telecommunications streaming platform in mainland China allowed to livestream the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup games.
Users will be able to use mobile apps or PC client software made by Migu to watch the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup, or they can use the Internet TV service offered by China Mobile to watch the games on TV.
Back in 2016, FIBA announced that Tencent had acquired the copyrights to all basketball tournaments organized by FIBA for the 2017-2025 period, including the Basketball World Cup. Since then, Tencent have been FIBA’s Exclusive Digital Media Partner in China.
By redistributing the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup media rights to Migu, Tencent can ensure a wider reach of the FIBA games, increasing the influence of the FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Action gets underway at the 2019 Basketball FIBA World Cup on August 31.
