The Municipal Government of Shanghai has published their city plan for the 2017-2035 period. In the 6th chapter of the plan, the government has stated its goal of constructing more professional sports stadiums in the city by 2035.
According to the terms in the plan, the government hopes that Shanghai could gain an edge in the sports industrymaking it famousaround the world.
To achieve this goal, the government requires that the city should have 4 sports complexes, including the Shanghai East Asia Sports & Recreation Center, Oriental Sports Center, Jiangwan Sports Center and the Pudong Sports Center which is currently under construction.
Meanwhile, the government will reserve some land for the building of new sports stadiums which will be used to host mega sports events. Another goal emphasized by the government in the plan is that there should be between 5 to 10 professional football stadiums in Shanghai by 2035.
Currently, the city has two famous professional football stadiums, Shanghai Shenhua’s home stadium Hongkou Football Stadium and SIPG’s Shanghai Stadium meaning Shanghai should construct between 3 to 8 more professional football stadiums by 2035 to achieve this goal.
