December 5: At a press conference held in Zhongguancun No.3 Primary School, Beijing, representatives from the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and Beijing Institute of Education (BIE) reviewed the implementation of the training program for PE teachers in underdeveloped regions of China.
In 2016, the Ministry of Education (MOE) and UNICEF jointly launched the PE Teacher’s training program and authorized BIE to oversee it. Reportedly, BIE delivered this program to PE teachers in four cities and counties, including Panzhou (Guizhou Province), Mile (Yunnan Province), Benxi Manchu Autonomous County (Liaoning Province) and Xincheng County (Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region).
According BIE’s representative Zhou Zhiyong, the institute will continue to bring this program to more remote regions in China, in order to improve the teaching skills of PE teachers there and encourage more children to do sports.
Additionally, the press conference also saw the launch of a new alliance in supporting children’s sports. Under the leadership of UNICEF, 10 primary schools with a sport’s curriculum in Beijing have formed an alliance to deliver PE lessons to schools in the four provinces and Autonomous Region mentioned previously. Furthermore, these schools will invite pupils from those regions to take part in friendly sports activities in Beijing.
