September 11: In a video posted on the NBA's Dallas Mavericks' official Weibo account, the team's owner Mark Cuban broke the news that the team Is seeking to change its current Chinese name "小牛(Xiaoniu)", which literally means "calves" with one that is more consistent with their traditional English nickname, Mavericks.
To find this new name, the Dallas Mavericks have partnered with Tencent Sports to host a campaign among Chinese fans aimed at collecting their ideas.
The first phase of the activity started on September 11 and will last until the 24th during which fans can send their suggestions to Tencent News, Tencent Sports and Tencent NBA, plus commenting on the Dallas Mavericks' official Wechat and Weibo accounts. It has been reported that over 10,000 fans sent their ideas on the first day.
Meanwhile, Tencent Sports will also interview other professionals in the NBA and research basketball and translation sectors on the topic of this new name.
The second phase will begin on September 25 and last for two weeks with three candidate names being selected by the Dallas Mavericks and Tencent Sports. The three Chinese names will be voted on by Chinese fans with the selected Chinese name announced by Mark Cuban.
