As reported by the daily sports newspapers Mundo Deportivo and Gazzeta dello Sport, FIFA will reportedly launch a new tournament called the "Super Club World Cup" to replace the Confederation Cup in 2021 with the new 24-team tournament reputedly to make its debut in China.
According to reports, the tournament will act as a club version of the World Cup with the selected 24-Super Club teams qualifying through their confederation competitions. The 24 sides would be divided into 8 groups of 3 teams with the winner of each group reaching the knockout stages.
In principle, these 24 teams would consist of 12 European clubs, 5 South American, 2 African, 2 Asian, 2 North American and the club who wins the first-tier league of the host country. The 12 European clubs will include the four preceding winners of the Champions League, the four preceding finalists and four others with the best UEFA coefficient. As for the Oceanian clubs, it is being speculated that they can have a representative through a playoff against a team from another confederation.
