On June 6, PPTV held a ceremony to launch their new Smart TV-set, the PPTV N55, and their new TV operating system, the PPOS 4.3 and as a global leader in various mega-events’ broadcasting rights, PPTV also announced their new media rights strategy. Gu Wei, Vice-President of Suning Commerce Group, the parent company of PPTV disclosed that the company will share their broadcasting rights with their partners.
In 2017, PPTV secured the broadcasting rights to the Chinese Super League (CSL) and AFC Champions League after they were given up by LeSports. Currently, PPTV has secured the exclusive media rights to La Liga, English Premier League, CSL, AFC Champions League, UFC, WWE and others with an estimated value of over 10 billion RMB ($1.47bn).
PPTV unveiled a two level strategy to share these broadcasting rights with their partners (mainly TV-set manufacturers). One is to jointly launch TV-sets embedded with the PPOS system, through which PPTV will open all content of those leagues to their partners. Alternatively, they will deliver the basic media rights contents by installing APKs in TV-sets manufactured by PPTV’s partners.
Regarding the selling of PPTV’s hardware and content, PPTV has gone for a high price approach with advertising, a membership system and e-commerce promoting their hardware and content commercialization strategy.
