On February 20th, WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) announced its new cooperation with PPTV Sports, to broadcast Pay - Per - View events on the PPTV Sports platform this year.
WWE is an American wrestling tournament with more than 10 subsidiary brand competitions, considered to be one of the world's most commercially valuable sports events. According to a public report, WWE achieved revenue of $659 million in 2015, and a profit of more than $38 million. Going on the most recent figures available, from the third quarter of 2016, WWE achieved revenue of $164 million, and a profit of $11.1 million. WWE has also gradually accelerated its expansion into the Chinese market in recent years.
WWE is planning to broadcast its largest-ever wrestling competition in April, and will use the PPV model during the event, states a report from Jingji.
According to Chinese media, to win high-quality rights resources, PPTV depends on the backing of the giant, Suning, and finding an effective model is particularly important for them against a background of intensifying market competition for rights. The Pay - Per - View cooperation with WWE can be seen as a testing of the waters by PPTV.
