SPORTACCORD 2024 INSIGHTS: Sport’s Perfect Storm

On Jan 5th, the ITTF announced a list of ratings for the Rio Olympics. According to the data, there was a total audience figure of 552.3 million for the table tennis competition at the Games.
The table tennis competition at the Rio Olympics gained a high rating in both China and Japan. In China, more than 372 million people watched the competition. During the Men’s Team Semi-Final, the game between the well-known Chinese table tennis player, Zhang Jike and the Korean Player, Jung Young-sik attracted an audience of 13.3 million Chinese people.
During the Games, the total audiences from Japan and America were 27.8 and 24.9 million respectively. Due to the participation of Brazilian players in the competition, 23.1 million Brazilians watched the table tennis competition, while 22 million Indian people watched the live broadcasts.
The ITTF also announced that the total Asian audience reached 433.1 million, including Chinese and Japanese audiences. The audiences from Europe and Oceania were 67 million and 4.1 million respectively. Even the audience number from Africa reached 100,000.
During the Rio Olympics, the broadcasts for the table tennis competition totaled 471.4 hours, with most viewers aged from 30 to 49, including both males and females. 13.5% of the total audience watched the table tennis competition.
