Recently, Han Zheng, the Party Secretary of Shanghai, had field research carried out re the construction of the Xujiahui Sports Park. The planning scheme will be published in Q1, 2017, and the construction will start in the first half of 2017. It will include some landmark stadiums like the Shanghai Indoor Stadium built in 1975, the Shanghai Swimming Center built in 1983, and the Shanghai Stadium built in 1998.
The aim of the Xujiahui Sports Park is to turn the area involved into an open sports park integrating the functions of fitness & recreation, youth training and international sports events. This will be done through urban renewal, providing more public open spaces with an active sports atmosphere and delivering more indoor and outdoor sports fields.
Han Zheng indicates that the Municipal Committee and Municipal Government of Shanghai have always attached great importance to the development of urban culture. They have given high priority to the comprehensive plan and layout adjustments of the urban cultural facilities during the thirteenth Five-Year Plan period.
Sport is a significant component of urban culture, which includes not only top-class competitive sports, but also a wide coverage of mass sports. The urban sports infrastructure should meet the needs of both international sports events and public fitness, instead of using some sports facilities for non-sporting purposes. There should be an even layout of sports facilities for the public and a scientific layout of sports facilities for professional events.
