The China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) and the General Administration of Sports of China (GASC) have jointly issued a guidance document on developing sports tourism.
The following development objectives have been outlined. By 2020, across the nation, the aim is to build 100 prestigious destinations for sports tourism, build 100 national level exemplary sports tourism destination , launch 100 sports tourism competition events, develop 100 sports tourism travel routes and cultivate 100 enterprises and brands of sports tourism featuring greater popularity and market competitiveness. By then, it is projected that the number of sports tourists will reach 1 billion, accounting for 15% of total tourists. The total consumption scale of sports tourism is also expected to exceed RMB 1 trillion.
These objectives are reflected in five specific tasks: developing fitness & leisure tourism; developing events tourism; developing sports tourism enterprises and encouraging the development of professional sports tourism organizations; improving the manufactures of equipment in relation to outdoor sports and fitness & leisure; building public service facilities for sports tourism in various regions, such as bikeways, hiking trails, scenic spot parking lots, etc.
