It has been reported by Reuters and Middle Eastern media that a Chinese company has won the contract to build the Qatar 2022 World Cup final stadium as part of a joint venture with Qatari contractor HBK Contracting.
The state-owned China Railway Construction Corp has secured a contract to build the main stadium for Qatar's 2022 World Cup, according to a statement by the tournament's organizers. As well as the final, the circular 80,000-seater Lusail stadium will host the opening game of Qatar 2022. "We are building a venue which will become an internationally-recognisable landmark, as the host venue for the opening and final matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup," said Mubarak Al-Khulaifi, the committee's project director for the stadium.
The site of the new stadium is in Lusail City, about 20 kilometres north of the Qatari capital Doha.
A statement released by Qatar's 2022 Supreme Committee states that builders will “swiftly” begin work on the British designed stadium with completion targeted for 2020.
Secretary General Hassan Al Thawadi of Qatar's Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy stated that, "Lusail Stadium will be the centre-piece of our tournament in 2022, and post tournament will become an integral part of the community in Lusail City in the legacy phase."
