SPORTACCORD 2024 INSIGHTS: Sport’s Perfect Storm

On November 14th, one important meeting concerning the Chinese sports industry was held in Beijing: the Policy Publicity Meeting for the Fitness and Leisure Industry / the 2016 Working Conference of the National Sports Industry. Wang Weidong, the Director General of Economic Department of General Administration of Sport of China (GASC), presented the “2016 Report on the Sports Industry”. It was the first time that GASC has made public how official business is conducted in the Sports Industry.
According to Wang Weidong, on October 25th, 2016, the General Office of State Council approved GASC documents and officially issued “Guidance on Speeding up the Development of the Fitness and Leisure industry."
In accordance with the requirements of the State Council, GASC has formulated a series of plans for the development of the Sports Industry and issued documents like the "Ice and Snow Sports Development Plan (2016-2025)." According to these documents, by 2020, the total value of the Water Sports Industry will reach 300 billion Yuan, the Air Sports Industry will reach 200 billion Yuan and the Outdoor Sports Industry will reach 400 billion Yuan.
GASC are promoting the implementation of an online reporting system and decided to spend 950 million Yuan on subsidising public sports venues’ free and low-cost tickets.
At present, 31 provinces and municipalities have finished the construction of a Directory Library of sports institutions. In accordance with the unified deployment of the National Standards Committee, 53 mandatory national standards were assessed and eliminated, 11 national standards were reviewed and approved and an industry standard was released.
