Deng Yaping, a former Chinese table tennis player, has become the President of Yunshang Sports, a Shenzhen-based startup co-founded by the CEO Wang Shengjiang.
Deng is regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, due to her six world championships and four Olympic championships. In 2009, she was appointed a deputy secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League of China and then became Secretary-General of the People's Daily.
In June, Deng resigned from the People's Daily and set up Yunshang Sports as part of the partnership with Wang Shengjiang, founder of Angel Plus New Space.
Yunshang has raised investment from Shenzhen-based real estate group Abloom Courtyard. It has set up a 10-member team to further its plans in sports entrepreneurship and sports investment.
In addition, Yunshang aims to help retired players create a second career in the sports business. In the first stage, their main focus will be on large Chinese cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
