Henan announced last Sunday that a women’s pro football club has been registered to promote the development of the sport in the province. The club will be jointly operated by the local football governing body and the Anhui Chamber of Commerce.
Zhang Yu, former chief executive of Henan Jianye FC, is to take the post of chairman. Men Wenfeng, who worked with Zhang in 2006 to contribute to Jianye’s promotion, will act as the chief coach.
As stated in a local news report, the club is expected to follow the operational model of a limited company.
The renamed Henan Merchants Women’s Football Club, formerly known as Henan Women’s Football Team, were once champions of the National Games, back in 1993. Last season, the team took second place in China League One, the second-tier national football league.
As Men said, the team will strain every nerve to achieve promotion to the Chinese Super League in 2016.
