On May 10, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) released the China Consumer Development Report 2017, which included the results of the ice and snow industry.
The report says that China’s ice and snow industry reached CNY397.6bn (USD62bn) in 2017. By the end of 2017, there were 703 ski resorts in China, as the number of skiers reached 17.5 million. The scale of ski-related consumption reached CNY72bn (USD11.34bn), accounting for 18.1% of the total size of the ice and snow industry.
From the perspective of consumption structure, 5% of the participants were involved in more than 10 times of ski activities, and the per capita consumption was about CNY 20,000 (USD 3,151) each year. 10% were involved in 5-10 times of ski activities, and the per capita consumption was about CNY 10,000 (USD 1,575) each year. About 85% participated in less than five times of ski activities, and the per capita consumption was about CNY 3,000 (USD 472) each year.
According to the report, the total consumption in skating reached CNY61bn (USD9.6bn) in 2017, accounting for 15.3% of the total size of the ice and snow industry.
As of June 2017, China had a total of 259 indoor skating rinks, which were mostly located in economically developed areas, including the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
From 2013 to 2016, the number of indoor skating rinks increased from 101 to 259, representing a year-on-year growth of 36.8%. The number of skating-related trips increased from 6.7 million to about 20 million.
Skating venues were mainly located in downtown areas and commercial complexes with near good communication networks. More than 90% of consumers were from ages 4 to 16 year old.
