At the China Central Television (CCTV) executive meeting held on Jan 29, Fang Gang was nominated as the new Director of CCTV’s sports channels.
Fang has been working for CCTV5 since 1995 and served as the Deputy Director of CCTV’s sports channels from August 2008 to September 2016, when the former Director of these channels Jiang Heping left his position. Since then, Fang has been serving as the Acting Director of CCTV’s sports channels, until officially being chosen as the new Director at the meeting.
Specifically, CCTV’s sports channels include CCTV5, CCTV5+ and a channel dedicated to football.
CCTV5 was the first sports channel launched by CCTV in 1995, broadcasting sports events and programs to overseas and its Chinese domestic audience. Later in 2004, a premium channel dedicated to football, CCTV风云足球 (literally translated as CCTV Football) went on air, becoming the first and only football premium channel on Chinese TV.
In 2013, CCTV launches its second sports channel, CCTV+, which is a 24-hour sports event channel.
