The Chinese General Administration of Sport (CGAS) released the first group of sports and recreational pilot town projects on their official website on August 10, 2017. However, as reported by the financial news website 21jingji.com, maybe not all of them have the right to be named as a “National Sports and Recreational Town”, due to requirements set out by the CGAS.
Zhao Yong, Deputy Director of the CGAS mentioned some official requirements for these towns: the construction of these towns should be finished within 3 years, towns should have a core area covering five to six square kilometers and contain around 20 sports and recreational activities. As for the investment, each of these towns has to raise more than RMB 2 billion (US$303.9m) with 50% coming from the sports industry. 21jingji.com also reported that the CGAS will invest RMB 3 million (US$45.6k) in each pilot project.
Meanwhile, the CGAS is also encouraging local governments to support these towns and recommending that towns partner with other investors, in order to get support for sports events, sports facilities and services.
