Today, Ali sports has struck a partnership with the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), winning the exclusive digital media rights in mainland China for the eighth Asian Winter Games. The Games will be held from 19th to 26th of this month(February) in Sapporo and Obihiro, Japan.

The Asian Winter Games, operating under the OCA, are the biggest winter games in Asia and are held every four years. After the last edition of the games, in Kazakstan in 2011, the OCA decided that in future they would hold the games the year before the Winter Olympic Games, therefore the Asian Winter Games scheduled for 2015 changed to this year.

It is the first time the OCA has distributed digital media rights for the games to a platform other than CCTV in mainland China. Alisports will broadcast the Sapporo 2017 Asian Winter Games on the Youku sports platform. They will also do studio interviews and on-site interviews every day at peak viewing times.

It is reported that besides the Sapporo 2017 Asian Winter Games, Ali sports is still seeking further cooperation with the OCA over the next five years or even longer.

In September 2015, Hangzhou, the location of Alibaba’s headquarter, successfully won the right to host the 2022 Asian Games. The Hangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee promised to host the Hangzhou Asian Games as a “green, intelligent, economic, civilized" sports event. As well as this, Zhang Dazhong, CEO of Alisports, said that they would promote the Asian Games in Hangzhou as an “unprecedented event featuring smart technologies.”
