President Xi Jinping met the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, on Wednesday at the International Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Xi expresses his appreciation to IOC President Bach and Honorary President Rogge for their trust and strong support for China’s sports undertakings. “The 2022 Winter Olympic Games will be one of the government’s priorities in the coming years. And a successful Winter Games in Beijing will benefit the economic growth of China and other countries and regions along the ‘One Road-One Belt’, which, in turn, will uphold the region’s peace and stability,” said Xi. ”We promise to host a green, open-minded and corruption-free Olympic event in Beijing.”
Bach says the IOC stands ready to work with China’ Organizing Committee to ensure an excellent Games in Beijing, and in so doing play its part in the Chinese people’s efforts in building the Chinese Dream.
After the meeting, President Xi and first lady Peng Liyuan toured the International Olympic Museum in the company of Bach, who also acted as guide.
During the tour, Xi stepped onto the podium of the Sydney Games in 2000, admired the badminton racket once used by China’s world champion Li Lingwei, and recalled the memory of the Beijing Games in 2008 whilst watching footage of the opening ceremony.
