SPORTACCORD 2024 INSIGHTS: Sport’s Perfect Storm
23 May 2024 14:34
Just weeks after La Liga president Javier Tebas’ announcement of the opening of a new office in Shanghai, a top Spanish club also announced plans to establish a commercial office in the Chinese city.
FC Barcelona has drawn up a six-year business plan with the aim of becoming the first football club in the world with €1bn in annual revenue. As part of its financial and global expansion plan, this leading Spanish club is looking to build a stronger presence in mainland China.
The La Liga giant has only one commercial office abroad (in Hong Kong) but is planning to open three more by 2017 — in Shanghai, New York and São Paulo, according to the club’s president Josep Maria Bartomeu.
“Those are the markets where Barça is pushing for growth,” he says.
As part of its global expansion plans, FC Barcelona has long been putting its focus on the Chinese market. The club has just agreed a partnership deal with Chinese internet giant Tencent to focus on the social media business in China.
