Chinese Football Association China League team Sichuan United FC announced on August 2 that they have obtained a new title sponsor, the Chinese alcohol brand Wuliangye. The title sponsorship has saved Sichuan United FC from going bankrupt.
Sichuan United FC can get a total of CNY50m from the title sponsorship. It is reported that they have applied to the Chinese Football Association for a change of their current Chinese name from “Sichuan Longfa Football Club” to “Sichuan Jianzhuang Football Club”. “Jianzhuang” in the new name is a Chinese baijiu brand that belongs to Wuliangye.
In return, Wuliangye gets jersey and stadium branding rights.
Apart from the title sponsorship, it is reported that Sichuan United FC will also obtain six other sponsorships. They can get up to CNY35m from the six sponsors.
Sichuan United FC currently plays in the second-tier Chinese professional football league. They were promoted last season after they won the championship title of the third-tier professional football league. They are the only Sichuan football team competing in the China League.
However, their sponsor pulled off investment last season, leaving the team with insufficient funding. It is reported that the club could not pay their players’ salaries on time.
Wuliangye is an important and elite Chinese baijiu brand with a long history. It is headquartered in Yibin, Sichuan Province.
