China Media Group published a statement on June 5 protecting its media rights to the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019 as the exclusive full media rights holder and distributor of the event in Mainland China. The statement highlights that no other organization or individual can broadcast the event in China in any way or form via any media channel without written authorization from China Media Group or organizations designated by CMG.
China Media Group will broadcast and live stream all matches of the Women’s World Cup 2019 which begins on Friday, June 7 in France, via CMG’s television channels, websites and applications. In addition there will also be shows based around the sport event.
CMG have been very clear and specific in pointing out possible ways of breaching the rights. The statement points out that any live and delayed broadcast/streaming, on-demand play, downloads, the airing of World Cup-related audio/video shows and content in public areas such as theatres, any signals or materials (including GIF videos) via any media platform such as television, radio, the Internet, mobile telecommunication network, IPTV, Internet TV, television on automobiles, applications and via any technologies, are forbidden and strictly in breach of CMG’s contract.
As sports becomes more important in China, protection of sports media rights has also become more prevalent in recent years.
China Media Group was formed in 2018 by combining China Central Television (CCTV), China National Radio and China Radio International into one media organization, called the Voice of China.
