In the early morning of April 22, the 55th World Table Tennis Championships kicked off in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. At the subsequent general meeting of the International Table Tennis Federation, it was announced that Chengdu, China, had won the bid to host the 2022 World Table Tennis Championships making it the fourth global major table tennis event to be held in Chengdu besides the 2018 Women’s Table Tennis World Cup and the 2019 Men’s and Women’s Table Tennis World Cups. Chengdu, Lisbon and Kitakyushu were the final bidders with the competition between the three cities extremely fierce.
It is estimated that 64 teams (32 women teams and 32 men teams), from different countries and regions will participate at the 2022 World Table Tennis Championships.
The International Table Tennis Federation founded the World Table Tennis Championships in 1926. Combined with the Olympic Games and the World Cup, they are called the “Big 3” events of the table tennis world. The championships are held every two years, with the Singles Championships being held in odd years and the Team Championships being held in even years. Previously the championships have been held in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Suzhou.
