Chengdu to host the 2021 Summer Universiade

The International University Sports Federation, the city of Chengdu and the Federation of University Sports of China signed a pre-attribution contract at a meeting of the FISU’s Steering Committee in Braga in Portugal on Thursday, Dec 13, regarding the 2021 Summer Universiade. 

The meeting has basically identified Chengdu as the host city of the 2021 Summer Universiade which is set to take place from August 8-19, 2021, as the FISU steering committee agreed unanimously to give the capital city of Sichuan Province the hosting rights. The hosting contract will be signed at a FISU Executive Committee meeting on March 1, 2019. 

The Mayor of Chengdu, Luo Qiang, Chief of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges at the Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China Liu Jin, Chinese Ambassador in Portuguese Cai Run, and the Federation of University Sports of China President Xue Yanqing attended the meeting. 

The Chinese delegation made a presentation about event hosting conditions such as accommodation, dining, transportation, competition, venues, security, experiences in hosting major events and about China’s concepts in participating in world university sports and driving the development of university sports in the world. 

Chengdu is the only candidate city for the 2021 Summer Universiade. 

The 2021 edition would be the third Summer Universiade to be held in China Mainland in two decades, following Beijing 2001 and Shenzhen 2011. The next Summer Universiade will be held in Naples, Italy between July 3 and 14 2019. 

In 2021, the competition program will include 18 sports, with over 10000 athletes and officials from approximately 170 countries and regions in the world gathering in Chengdu.
