July 14: Two Chinese teams, whose home stadium is the Shenzhen University Game Center, will play in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) starting from the 2017/18 season, China’s HC Kunlun Red Star and the CWHL announced in Beijing.
The signing ceremony was held in front of John McCallum, Ambassador of Canada to China and the Honorable Carla Qualtrough, Canada’s Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities.
Also in attendance were the CWHL commissioner Brenda Andress and the Kunlun Red Star founder Yue Xinyu plus other executives.
Prior to the ceremony, Chinese President Xi Jinping met John McCallum and said that China is pleased to expand cultural and knowledge exchanges and cooperation with Canada in areas such as education, culture, tourism, young talents and winter sports.
The CWHL, founded in 2007, is the highest women's ice hockey league in Canada. The league recently expanded to six teams with the addition of Kunlun Red Star from China. It also has teams in Calgary, Toronto, Montreal and Boston.
